This course is designed to help the participant expand their understandings of what “close reading” is. We will explore new interpretations of text and media analysis through the analysis of multiple types of media and their intersections.

This course is for teachers at any grade level and subject area, who used media in any form to support teaching and learning.
Envision the reimagining of what “text analysis” could look like in any classroom. What if that analysis went beyond a singular media (text) and we expanded analysis opportunities across multiple types of media? We want students who think, discern, and analyze, not just when they’re reading, but when they are experiencing any form of input or communication. What does the citation of specific evidence, that exists in multiple types of media, look like in practice? How do students participate in “close viewings” of video and artwork, “close listening” of speeches, songs, and radio plays, and “close analyses” of multiple types of intersecting media? In this course, we’ll explore ways to make authentic in-class analysis mirror the out-of-class types of media that bombard our students daily.
